The following indicates some of the highlights in my career to date.
Some Aid Projects I have worked on
Team Leader for ELTIP, Bangladesh. This was a DFID funded and British Council managed project involving a large bi-cultural team. A network of
regional resource centres was set up to deliver in-service training to English teachers while other strands of the project wrote textbooks for grades
9 to 12 and delivered training courses to national examination boards. The success of this project lay in the building and developing of a national
organisation and thus involved expertise in project management. Duration: 4 years.
Director, Civil Service Training Centre, Northern Cyprus. This was a ODA (now DFID) funded and British Council managed project designed to
establish a training centre for Turkish-Cypriot civil servants in Northern Cyprus. The project was seen as a necessary precursor to eventual integration of
Turkish and Greek civil services following any peace settlement. The project involved designing a physical environment and developing materials and
curriculum as well as human resource development. Duration: 4 years
International Consultant, General Education Project II, National Institute of Education, Sri Lanka. This was a World Bank funded and Sri Lankan
Ministry of Education managed project designed to undertake a national survey of ELT and a review of syllabus. It also involved running workshops for
resource centre managers, mentors, materials writers and teacher-trainers. Duration: 1 year.
Training Consultant. Capacity Building Group Project, Independent Reform and Civil Service Commission, for British Council on behalf of
European Commission, Kabul, Afghanistan: Designed and administered a needs analysis questionnaire for the Civil Service. Developed
a Civil Service placement test.. Designed and delivered a training course for teachers working in the CPG project. Designed final proficiency test.
Developed teacher-training trainer capacity in the project.
Some evaluation and feasibility consultancies I have conducted.
Feasibility Study, for Ministry of Education, Ethiopia on behalf of British Council. Assisting the Ministry of Education in helping identify and make
recommendations towards the development of a strategy action plan to establish a Master of Education programme designed to develop teacher-
training capacity in an Ethiopian university. This consultancy involved survey and research skills as well as interpersonal and presentation expertise.
Consultancy, Uzbekistan Military English Reform Project, British Council, Tashkent. Designed, planned and costed resource centre establishment in
the project. This included a change management strategy.
Evaluation, Chihuahua Autonomous University: Conducted workshops in the review of the BA in ELT programme, involving an appropriate
consultatory methodology
Review, Chiapas Autonomous University: Conducted workshops in the review of the BA in ELT programme. This involved undertaking a joint curriculum
building process towards a syllabus reform.
Review consultancy, East Mediterranean University (EMU), Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. To review ELT curriculum in preparatory school.
To report to British Council and make recommendations.
Some work in Higher Education I have been involved in
Key English Language Teaching Adviser (KELTA), Boğazici University, Istanbul, Turkey. Managed the Curriculum Committee of Preparatory School
(YADYOK) in selection and development of foundation course teaching materials, and organisation of in-service training for staff. Designed and delivered
RSA Dip TEFLA programme (DELTA). Developed support study materials for proficiency test. Developed a resource centre. .Duration: 3 years.
Senior Lecturer, University College Plymouth (St Mark and St John), Plymouth, UK. Taught graduate and post-graduate programmes:
Course leader for MEd programmes in Hungary and Mexico (“home-and-away” distance programme): Trainer-training on MEd courses and post grad
certificates courses, dissertation supervision, taught study and research skills. Taught the educational management strand on MEd programme and
a post graduate certificate course in educational management. Course leader for various "tailor-made" internal courses including Zambian inspectors,
Malaysian maths and science mentors, trainer-training development programmes, various textbook writing groups. Duration: 5 years.
Course Director, Diploma in Foundation English for Academic Purposes (DipFEAP) Magee Campus, University of Ulster: Includes design and
steering programme through university validation process.
EAP Tutor: University of Southampton, Centre for Language Studies, Taught multi-disciplinary graduate students on pre-sessional courses.
